What we do at From the ground up
Here is a brief synopsis of what we do, with tasks split within four principle disciplines.

Regular border maintenance
We advocate the little and often approach. Similar to having a cleaner visit every week, but different because we only charge for what we do, and we only spend as much time as needed. That said, if you need a “one off”, we can do that too.
Broadly, we tend beds and borders, seasonal pruning, planting, dividing, edging lawns. Removing and stopping weeds, making it look neat and tidy.
Don’t think though that it only deserves attention in the summer. Just as a well-maintained home creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, a regularly tended garden border sets the stage for your hard working plants to thrive. The work in spring through autumn is most obvious, but it doesn’t stop there. Winter might seem like a time for your garden to rest, but it’s actually the perfect – nay, only – opportunity to prepare for a spectacular spring display.
Weeding
Keeping the beds turned and weed free is akin to dusting your home. Just as you wouldn’t let dust and clutter accumulate in your living room, you shouldn’t let weeds take over your garden borders. Regular weeding prevents these unwanted plants from stealing nutrients and space from your cherished flowers and shrubs, ensuring they have everything they need to grow strong and healthy. Furthermore, is more cost effective, that “little and often” approach is always cheaper than stop/start and the often substantial recovery work required.
Breaking Soil
An essential task all year round, when it is colder allows winter weather to do some of the work for you, leaving and free draining but neat tilth. This gently aerated soil allows water, nutrients, and air to penetrate deeper, promoting healthier root systems. This simple task helps your plants withstand the cold months and prepares the ground for vigorous growth in spring, as well as making it look neater.
Border Care
Trimming back dead or overgrown plants, removing debris, and tidying up edges not only keeps your garden looking neat but also reduces the risk of pests and diseases.
By dedicating time to your garden borders during the winter, you’re not just keeping them tidy—you’re laying the groundwork for a stunning spring transformation. Just as a well-kept home creates comfort and joy, a well-maintained garden brings beauty and serenity to your outdoor space.
Little and often
Regular visits are based on your requirements and budget, from 15 minutes per fortnight for a small garden, to 3 or 4 hours per week. Visits are charged by the time present, not by any appointment time. So if we don’t need to stay as long as planned – your garden grows according to what nature allows, not the date – you are charged only for what we need to do.
Can be as much or little as you want, a team can call from 15 minutes per fortnight to 4 hours per week.
Regular lawn care
Caring for your grass is not just about cutting it.
How we can help to keep your lawn as you want it.
Everyone has a different view on what they want from their lawn, and hence how much effort – and money – they are prepared to invest. But many just set aside the lawn – or the entire garden – in winter.
We provide a balanced approach to suit every requirement, with treatments and work to coincide with you being away, or the dog not being home. Your lawn will return what you put in, even if that is just enough to keep it looking neat throughout the year.
Consistent Care
Think of your lawn as a marathon runner. Just as athletes maintain their fitness through a balanced diet and regular training, your lawn benefits from consistent maintenance. Aerating the soil, keeping leaves and debris from accumulating, and mowing (when necessary) helps keep diseases at bay and ensures that your grass breathes and remains healthy throughout the colder months.
Nurture Your Lawn in Winter, Reap the Rewards in Spring
Winter is a good time for repairs too. Overseeding weak areas can help thicken your lawn. A winter fertilizer ensures that come spring your grass has the nutrients it needs to grow lush and green.
By tending to your lawn during the winter months, you’re not just keeping it alive. You’re setting the stage for a stunning spring display. Your lawn’s beauty isn’t a coincidence; it’s a testament to the care and preparation you invest in it.
- Regular mowing, as needed season to season
- Scarifying and aerating
- Seasonal treatments, feed, weed killer, moss killer, top dress
- Autumn and winter leaf clearance
- Routine edge and tidy should nothing else be needed
Visits can be from as little as 15 minutes, and are charged by the time present and equipment required.
Hedges, topiary and shrubs
Similarly, hedges can often be made to perform better. That is, be neater for longer, by trimmming little and often rather than having a major overhaul. The most obvious difference is in the volume of waste.
We are conscious that we want to keep these plants for their qualities other than screening. They can provide flower and fruit, food and shelter for birds, and security.
We have access equipment that allows us to reach most tall hedges, across tended beds below, high shrubs and topiary.
These are tended by arrangement or your instruction to maintain as need be.
The other bits
Whilst our primary work is in plants, things that grow, there are other minor works we do regularly.
We can provide planting plans, decriptive or pictoral. And we support gardens with irrigation install and manage, lawn edges, climbing plant support, hard surface cleaning.
Teams
The workload is divded between teams that are by virtue of the fact they are not all rounders, much more experienced. They can combine to support each other on areas that cross over, such as lawn edges, or topiary trimming. But building teams where more time tending similar tasks provides more knowledge more people are able to step in when needed.
Consequently we are able to provide a more comprehensive and better quality service.
